The Cassatt & Barrett Browning tote is part of our Modern Art Collection, combining the visual and literary arts to inspire and uplift. Insights can be drawn from the connection between the paired image and thought.
Mary Cassatt (1844-1926), American painter and printmaker, is known for her portrayals of women in their daily lives, creating impressions with depth and dignity. Her works capture the meaningful inner lives of women and her contributions to the art world uplift a perspective of women separate from the male gaze. She also fought for women’s rights through activism and fundraising, including exhibiting in an art show to bring in funds to support women’s suffrage.
Elizabeth Barrett Browning (1806-1861), English poet, was prolific from a young age, dedicating her purpose to her craft. In 1850 she rivaled Tennyson for poet laureate. Using her platform of privilege, she advocated for abolition and against child labor, going against the history of her family. Her words, “Love me in full being”, while extracted from a love poem, hold meaning for those who historically, and to this day, strive to be acknowledged and respected as whole beings within society.
