The Kirchner & Brontë shirt is part of our Modern Art Collection, combining the visual and literary arts to inspire and uplift. Insights can be drawn from the connection between the paired image and thought.

Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (1880-1938), German Expressionist Painter and Graphic Artist, created Girl in White Chemise in 1914. Bold, vibrant, and emotive, his body of work evokes a full spectrum of emotions.  Later, he was targeted by the Nazi regime as part of their Degenerate Art campaign and many of his works were seized. To explore his history now, helps us remember the importance of free expression and art in the face of fascism.

Emily Brontë (1818-1848), English Novelist and Poet, published Wuthering Heights in 1847. Known as solitary, mysterious, and passionate, Literary News (1883) states that she, "loved the solumn moors, she loved all wild, free creatures and things". Her vivid expression of how dreams can color our minds with lasting impressions is reminiscent of the impact art can have on us in the same way.
