The Hilma af Klint top is part of our Modern Art Collection, as a special edition item that features the same person as the artist and voice being represented. We aim to uplift a lesser-known female artist from history and share her legacy through both her visuals and her words.
Hilma af Klint (1862-1944), Swedish artist and mystic, created abstract works that predated the male artists who ended up defining the genre, due in part to her insistence that her work not be released for public consumption until 20 years after her death. Art historians have since begun to shine a light on her prescience and foundational role in the world of abstract art. She never married and lived in community with other women, creating collaboratively and exploring spirituality through mysticism. These influences as well as themes of science, nature, and the paranormal are symbolically represented in her work. She expressed a sense of being before her time through her desire to keep her work shrouded until well after her passing. In life, she believed in connecting with the spirits, and now we aim to keep her spirit alive, by connecting with you through art and the spirit of giving.
